Did you know about these interesting facts about the Victoria Day?

    - In Quebec Victoria Day is called "fête des patriotes"
    - It is not a statutory holiday in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island
    - celebrated since 1952 on Monday before May 25th. Before that it was May 24th
    - Memorial Day in honor of the birthdays of Queen Victoria and Queen Elisabeth II
    - Victoria Day was proclaimed a public holiday in 1845
    - Appointed by Parliament in 1901 National Day.

    History:

Victoria Day, celebrated only in Canada and Scotland, began as a celebration in honor of Queen Victoria's birthday. The British Queen was born on May 24, 1819. She is the longest reigning monarch in England and remained on her throne for 63 years, 216 days. On September 9, 2015, Queen Elizabeth II assumed the title of the longest reigning monarch in British history. For some, Victoria Day is a sign that summer is just around the corner.

When Queen Victoria died in 1901, the Canadian parliament officially named the Victoria Day. And it was decided that the day would be celebrated every year on the 24th of May (or on the 25th of May, when the 24th fell on a Sunday). However, as early as 1845, the Victoria Day was declared a Canadian holiday by the government. At this time, he was celebrated with picnics, parades, sports tournaments, fireworks and cannon salute.

Today, Victoria Day is a holiday throughout Canada. And in Quebec, on the same day, a holiday called Journée nationale des patriotes is celebrated. In 1952, the government decided to celebrate Victoria Day on Monday.

The Victoria Day is celebrated in most cities today with parades, outdoor events and activities such as camping and fireworks.

We wish you all lots of fun outside on this long weekend!
