It’s that time of year again: In many places, German and local vendors create a Christmas atmosphere
It is impossible to imagine Germany without Christmas markets. More than 85 million visitors come to the markets every year to be enchanted by nutcrackers, mulled wine and other handmade goods. Some German Christmas markets have their origins in the Middle Ages. One of Germany’s most popular market – the one in Dresden – first opened in 1434.
The festive markets are also becoming increasingly popular in other countries – especially in the USA, the Netherlands, Italy and Japan. The “German-themed Christmas Market“ in Osaka, Japan, is one of the largest of its kind. Canada cannot escape the magic, either.
In Germany, the Herrnhut star, also known as Moravian Star, is the ultimate Christmas decoration and part of a long-standing custom. All stars are handmade in Herrnhut, Germany – 600,000 a year. Just before, during and after Christmas the star decorates about 40 German Christmas markets. Meanwhile, about ten percent of the stars are shipped abroad – and the trend is rising. Despite that, the company is growing slowly – for a good reason: quality assurance. After all, the stars are still to be produced by hand, and every craft takes time. You can recognize the original Herrnhut Star by its 25 points.
On the North American Christmas markets, you have the opportunity to have a look at the stars in all available sizes and colors, because they make a big part of the decorations. In Vancouver, Charlotte, Kitchener, Mifflinburg, St. Pauls and Des Moines you can even buy them. The Vancouver Christmas Market is the first one to open. MyBrilliantStar has been at the market since 2013. Our friendly staff is there to answer any questions you may have about the star, its history and how to assemble it.
We also have handmade incense burners and cones from HUSS available at our stand. Come an discover the Herrnhut Star and many other special German products at the North Amercian Christmas markets.
Enjoy the Holiday Season!
